Newport 350th Anniversary

The year 2021 is a year of celebration for all Seventh Day Baptists, as it represents the 350th anniversary of the first congregation founded in North America at Newport, Rhode Island. Though SDBs began earlier in England, the movement took root in North America and blossomed there. In celebration of this anniversary, we commissioned Seventh Day Baptists from around North America to serve as “virtual tour guides” to the history of the congregation. We hope you will enjoy this “tour” of the developments of that little congregation which are still so central to all of our congregations!

Panel Discussion

At the virtual General Conference sessions of the SDB General Conference of the USA & Canada, in celebration of the 350th anniversary of the Newport, RI SDB church, a panel discussion was held to celebrate and discuss the important historical threads of the General Conference that find their source in the Newport SDB church. We hope you will enjoy and benefit from this panel now after the fact!

Conference Seminar

During the 2021 virtual sessions of the SDB General Conference, Director of History Nick Kersten gave a seminar entitled, “The Legacy of the Newport Seventh Day Baptist Church,” summarizing and drawing lessons from the life and legacy of the congregation. We are glad to make it available to you here as we continue to celebrate the rich heritage entrusted to Seventh Day Baptists from that congregation.
